Hi:

I deasagree with you. This is essentially the same photo as File:Trombe.jpg, just a tiny bit zoomed-in on the right side. It is from the same author and same original source. It was just uploaded on Flicker and mindlessly uploaded later on Commons.

That means it's not an exact duplicate, so it has to go to DR. Since you've already nominated it, there's nothing more to do here. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 20:57, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Two days ago, I requested the split of File:MTA NYC Bus M42 bus at 1100 Avenue of the Americas.jpg from File:MTA NYC Bus M8 bus on 3rd Ave & 8th St.jpg. While the split was successful, the M42 bus image is still showing up in all the categories that are intended for the M8 bus. I too did several null edits, but it still didn't fix this problem. Why is that the case? --DanTD (talk) DanTD (talk) 21:08, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@DanTD OK. I think the problem is on your end, but just to be sure, can you confirm whether File:M8 bus screenshot (for discussion).png and File:M42 bus screenshot (for discussion).png are correct or incorrect? —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 21:17, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
On your screenshots they're fine. When I look at it, the M42 bus still shows up on all the cats with the M8 bus. Maybe the problem is on my end, but I have no idea why I can't change it. ----DanTD (talk) 21:47, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DanTD Maybe clearing your cache and holding shift when refreshing could help? —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 23:51, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Holding shift when refreshing certainly did. Thanks. ----DanTD (talk) 19:36, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi :) Each time when Polish Wikisources' files are [1]] renamed, we have got a lot of problems, especially when the book has been already proofreaded.

File:Philippines road sign S1-4E.svg[edit]

Hi there, without contacting me you simply deleted this file - claiming it's a duplicate - which I happily believe you.

But where is the duplicate? If you would be so kind next time when you simply delete something - to point out to other human beings where is the duplicated file with the Philippines Dimensions as set by the DPWH of the Republic of the Philippines is so we can use that one?

For instance this search: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=S1-4E&title=Special:MediaSearch&go=Go&type=image results for me in 0 hits. SO please point out to me where the duplicated version is?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_signs_in_the_Philippines I checked this site where is the duplicate for the "Check Brakes" sign with the dimensions as set by the DPWH of the Republic of the Philippines, it's not listed there. Really looking forward to the comment why you believe it's a duplicate and thus why the work of creating this file per hand according to the specifications of the DPWH has to be deleted.

Mrgenie (talk) 11:17, 15 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Mrgenie The file was claimed to be a duplicate of File:Philippines road sign S1-4.svg, but I just checked again and the dimensions and font were different (don't know how I missed this. Undeleted. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 15:58, 15 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What's useful with a bogus kept?[edit]

What's useful with this utterly nonsensical kept, that only stands there, because of some vandal inserted without ant thought bsome completely bogus deletion request on the other side? If it would have been some valid discussion about a proper deletion request, okay, but this was just plain vandalism. Grüße vom Sänger ♫ (talk) 13:47, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It was not vandalism. It was a mistake, but one someone could make in the future. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 14:39, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

User A1Cafel[edit]

Hi, I saw that user A1Cafel has been blocked for violations. In the past this user deleted many images of Dubai that I uploaded from Flickr (with valid license) claiming they violated the FOP. I'm not sure this has always been correct. For example, I uploaded several images of pavilions related to Dubai EXPO 2020, which A1Cafel deleted due to FOP, but on Commons there are already dozens of images of other pavilions of EXPO 2020, all similar to the ones I uploaded. So I ask, is it possible to verify that the cancellations made by A1Cafel of my images are correct? Thank you Mario1952 (talk) 09:41, 25 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Ricky81682 That category was a member of Category:Women wearing bikinis and high-heeled shoes while smiling and standing (which was a member of Category:Standing women wearing bikinis, Category:Smiling women wearing bikinis, and Category:Women wearing bikinis and high-heeled shoes) and Category:Women wearing black bikinis while smiling and standing. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 15:31, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please check categories when redirecting to duplicates[edit]

Good day. I noticed that something you deleted and redirected to a different version, File:Bill of Fare at Andre's Restaurant 02-1974 (3953734634).jpg, was much better categorized (eg, "February 1974 in Colorado" whereas the one you kept is simply "Colorado in the 1970s"; the gone version was categorized for the city, etc. I'll fix this one, but please pay attention to this in the future - making sure information is not lost when redirecting to "duplicates" is an important part of the process. Thanks for your attention. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 17:24, 3 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wikipedia Logos[edit]

Hello Mdaniels5757, maybe you can help again with moving some logos, but this time some more in once!? So...

Situation: During my visits in the area of the wikimedia logos I also felt on the Wikipedia logo, better on the Wikipedia logos. So the situation there:

I think when one area is structured in one way, using only one name if there is only one thing and not classic & 2003 or v2 & 2010. So what pair is better? What are the more precise category names? I think "classic" is not a good definition for a category and "v2" can also be misunderstood, thinking that there were only a "v2" and "classic" version (quasi "v1"), but there are already two more versions prior to them. So what to do?

My intervention was: I think using the years in brackets at the end of the names as a key for the different versions is more Commons like, more unmistakable and more clear than names like "classic" for a third version of something and "v2" for a fourth version (or 3.1 version). Using the years fits also better with categories like 2003 logos or 2010 logos, where no one of the logos or categories was yet connected. So for the sake of consistency:

  • I unifyed the names and renamed the categories with "v2" and "classic" in their name uniformly to 2010 and 2003
  • created own categories for the three older versions of the logo, see all in Wikipedia logo history.

Why I am asking? During this process I couldn't move all of the Logos to their renamed categories, the protected ones now remained on a redirect categoy which led to the following "Non-empty category redirects":

So if you can empty these Non-empty category redirects and move the protected files there to their renamed categories would be awesome! Thx a lot already!! --W like wiki good to know 00:06, 11 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Speedy talk page attributed to "None"[edit]

I noticed that after "GeorgR (de)" added {{SD|F1}} to File:FB Collage.jpg, the bot notified the uploader by saying it was nominated by "None". This seems like a bug. If there have to be cornercases where the editor isn't known, perhaps the sentence could be skipped since "None" is actually a valid and linked username. Krinkle (talk) 21:25, 12 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Huh. I'm not sure why it couldn't detect the nominator name, but I added some code to not print the nominator or have it be unlinked "Unknown". Best, —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 00:15, 13 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ticket 2023011210010224[edit]

Are you completely satisfied that the email behind this ticket covering File:AletaHancockHeadshot.jpg is from the actual photographer and is completely genuine? I ask because the uploader, User:Jamesjones2234, has violated a lot of rules, including recreating a gallery, creating a sockpuppet, reloading deleted images, and extensive conflict of interest editing on WP (see Draft:Weston Hancock.

I note that Jamesjones claims that the actual photographer is Weston Hancock (son of Aleta) while the upload text reads, " Uploaded a work by Unique Nicole from https://www.instagram.com/aletahancock/ with UploadWizard." Also, at one point it was noted that this image is extracted from File:Hancock Family 2022.jpg which has been deleted three times. The upload note on that file says that the photographer was Craig T. Mathew from https://mathewimaging.zenfolio.com/. So, on the record the image has three different photographers.

@Jameslwoodward: ticket:2023011210010224 purports to be from Weston Hancock, and I'm satisfied that it's from them. There were no red flags in there. But looking at ticket:2023011110008766, it's actually worse than you said: there's apparently a fourth photographer, who also did not give permission. I'll delete File:AletaHancockHeadshot.jpg. Deletion requests/File:BA 38 aerial view with ground scars.png - not speedy?[edit]

I added the speedy deletion tags to the file. I saw they were missing, but there was nothing in the file history showing their removal, so I thought I'd made a mistake and added them back. I know this image is not open-licensed, that its copyright belongs to the Metropolitan Police, they are specifically exempted by the Keeper of the National Archives (UK, the governing authority) from OGL licensing, and we do not have a license from the Met to use it. Therefore it's a copyright violation, right? Isn't that a speedy? Also, I am the uploader, and I am making the request. Doesn't that also make it a speedy? I normally work on Wikipedia, and these processes are a little different here, so please bear with my learning curve. Thanks! Dcs002 (talk) 01:17, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Dcs002 Yes, the file was speedy-eligible, but you also tagged the deletion request page, which messes up the categories. I just speedied the file and closed the deletion request. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 02:10, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you so much! I've made one big mistake and a few smaller ones, and I've learned a lot from this episode. I hope not to repeat these mistakes. Thanks for helping me to clean up my mess. Dcs002 (talk) 04:29, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Category:Jiří Felger[edit]

Hi. I don't necessarily disagree that it "might" be useful to keep since it has a "No Uploads" template. But then again all their information, including the copyright status of their works, is available on Wikidata and there's nothing to put in the category. So it's not like anything is being lost by deleting it. Also, the clear consensus has been to delete empty unlikely to be used categories regardless of if they have a "No Uploads template or not. I don't want to set a precedent. For one it would just make certain categories, like Category:Painters from Czechia, unmanageable. The point in categories isn't to act as a faux way to find out if a creators work is copyrighted or not either. It's organize files into and in this case there are files to put in the category. So I'd appreciate it if you deleted it after all. Otherwise, I guess I could do a regular deletion, but I rather not waste everyone's time by doing one if there's no reason to. Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 08:57, 23 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Adamant1 Yeah, on second thought, I agree, especially given the consensus. Deleted. Best, —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 15:11, 23 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File:Southern-nazarene logo from NCAA.svg[edit]

Hi, I saw you deleted the file File:Southern-nazarene logo from NCAA.svg for exceeding COM:TOO. I disagree that this exceeds TOO; it's just a generic lightning bolt with three letters on it. It's certainly less complex than, say, File:Cyberpunk 2077 logo.svg or File:San Francisco Shock (logo).svg. Similar to the sound waves in the San Francisco Shock logo, I think the lightning bolt in this image is a pretty standard visualization of lightning, and is "so obvious, familiar, or commonplace to diminish their creative nature or registrability" (wording from the USCO decision on the Shock logo). Could you please explain your thinking? Cheers, IagoQnsi (talk) 01:31, 24 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for bringing the Shock logo decision to my attention; I must have not noticed on COM:TOO I'm not sure about it's applicability to this case, I think this is a bit more like w:en:File:Pac-12 logo.svg than the shock logo, but it's a much closer call than I thought it was. I've undeleted the file, and am starting a deletion discussion with this conversation. Best, —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 01:40, 24 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Seed catalogs...[edit]

I ran a more extensive query... https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=23953436 and it showed even more problematiclly licensed images..

It's likely a number may be non-renewal or non-notice, but there are NOT PD-US-Gov.

I've also created Category:Henry G. Gilbert Nursery and Seed Trade Catalog Collection/checked in which to put the pre 1928 items. Assistance in ensuring it doesn't contain post 1928 items appreciated... ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 08:30, 26 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Seed catalogs (2)[edit]

https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=23974104 These were apparently tagged (or updated to be no-notice) in the past - 120 files is more reasonable to audit to confirm the lack of notice, if you have the time.

BTW I've started the category structure by year... I don't mind some category restructuring if it's clear what's going on... ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:30, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@ShakespeareFan00 I just checked a dozen random ones and they all seemed to lack notice. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 00:22, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Why did you restore this file? There is an UnDR open at which I raised two copyright issues. .     Jim . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 13:18, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi @Jameslwoodward. I didn't notice the open undeletion request. I restored the file because I received permission from the Image Rights Manager of the art gallery, who confirmed that the gallery owns the copyright to the image and the depicted work. I'll note this there. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 17:25, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks and apologies -- in rereading, "Why did you restore this file?" is far too aggressive for a simple question among colleagues. I should have said something like, "I don't understand why you restored this file? Perhaps you didn't see the open UnDR." .     Jim . . . Hi There : I have founds 3 photos of me on Wikipedia Commons from an event in the UK (WNBR) that I need removed please ...[edit]

I'n unable to discuss this on the noticeboards as the images involve nudity : is there a private/closed email where I can send you the links ? Images were taken without me knowing and have caused me problems with employer and family and comments on social media have not been good due to people objecting to the ride in the UK . Please hit back thankyou . Goodperson5678 (talk) 19:00, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Goodperson5678 You can email info-commons@wikimedia.org for help with this. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 21:41, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have already done this & they have told me to discuss this on the community deletion discussion boards, which I cannot do due to the nature of the images. If I get the original.poster to contact you, can you then delete the images? 213.205.194.63 22:56, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Goodperson5678 No, deletion will have to be through a formal deletion request, which can be evaluated by the community. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 23:26, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question about VRTS permission at File:JFSS 2.jpg[edit]

Thank you for adding the VRTS template to File:JFSS 2.jpg. I was the one who suggested to the author that they release the photo under a free license. I believe that the VRTS ticket also includes permission to use all photos on https://www.randyselzer.com/ and not just for File:JFSS 2.jpg. If so, then what should I do if I upload more photos from that website, or if I come across more files on Commons originating from Selzer's website? FunnyMath (talk) 14:15, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@FunnyMath The ticket says that the sender is open to allowing other media to be shared on an individual request basis, but does not provide blanket permission. So having permission for each photo is still required. If you come across more files without permission, I'd reach out and see if the author is willing to provide it. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 15:33, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

My request for adminship[edit]

Hello! I want to thank you for your participation and input in my recently failed request for adminship. I take every word everybody said in the most constructive way and it is my intention to not only do my best for Commons (as long as time and real life allows me to), but to continue learning and helping out whenever I can. I very much appreciate your support, even though it was pretty obvious my request would fail, but I understand those concerns and considerations and will take them at heart. I hope to see you again, collaborating around Commons. Have a good day. Bedivere (talk) 03:20, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Bedivere Thank you for your kind message. I also hope to see you around Commons soon, and hope I get to Symbol support vote.svg Support you for adminship in another request once you have some more experience. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 18:34, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Your translation-adminship[edit]

Hi @Mdaniels5757, Glad to see your request for CU. I wish you good luck. However, I have some concerns with your being into translation-adminship as well. I am able to see that you have not been doing very well with this right, though it is not a requirement, but so many jobs distract us from each other. Would you like to take it down? Of course, you can re-grant the flag to yourself whenever in need but I don't see the need at this time. ─ The Aafī (talk) 18:29, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@TheAafi I agree that translation adminship is not necessary for me, and just removed it. Thanks for noticing, —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 18:32, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Protecting files[edit]

There is no need to protect files where I am fighting with these Russian bot farms. They immediately choose another file. Two times per day I rollback them to keep them busy in one file. In general, longer topic related to my admin activities in Wikidata Estopedist1 (talk) 20:28, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

My understanding is that this is w:en:WP:LTA/GRP, not a Russian bot farm. I don't have too much experience with them, so I'll be a bit less liberal with protection for you, but some protection seems to slow them down a bit. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 21:03, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
in Wikiata, we are trying to use different abuse filters to slower them down, but with little success. Hopefully Wikimedia will implement en:MAC filtering which may be an ultimate solution for LTAs Estopedist1 (talk) 06:35, 5 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
