Carpet & Drapery Stores in Allentown, Pennsylvania has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Thanks for uploading File:1930 - Benesch & Sons - 16 Dec MC - Allentown PA.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Reverting all edits[edit]
Is there a particular reason you are reverting edits like these? I am using my alt but I was sorting them into the separate newspapers and the newspaper by year (rather than have separate Category:Morning Call, Allentown, Pennsylvania, Category:Newspapers of the United States, 1960 and Category:1960 in Allentown, Pennsylvania which you kept for some reason. I'm just trying to understand why you think it's better to have it organized entirely by decade when cities are typically organized by year. If I misunderstood something, then I'll leave it alone. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 06:45, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
- These have not been worked on since July. It appeared that someone had started something, gave up and went on to other things. Instead of changing categories, why don't you simply just add them. Or if you are going to change them, use a bot to change them in masse and leave a #redirect from where they were so they can be found. Destroying what was done by others is not helpful. Thank you Atwngirl (talk) 10:00, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
- These were worked on by User:Tippopotamus which is an alternative account I use for semi-autonomous edits. As to moving them all, Category:Allentown, Pennsylvania in the 1960s alone is over 2500 files and it requires precision and thought to re-categorize them. The Dorney Park ones I agree can be done by additional categories so I'll do that but the dividers you chose are not the usual ones (typically it is by decade or further by year) which is what I was doing. The other files are being placed down within the same categories as before. Instead of File:1960 - Dorney Park - 7 Jul MC - Allentown PA.jpg being part of 2500 documents in Category:Allentown, Pennsylvania in the 1960s where someone will at some point want to separate based on the fact that it is a newspaper advertisement, it is from the Morning Call, it is from a 1960 newspaper, it is in Allentown that year, I put it into Category:The Morning Call (Allentown, PA), 1960 (which is inside Category:1960 in Allentown, Pennsylvania which is inside Category:Allentown, Pennsylvania in the 1960s) rather than have hundreds of the same files placed in subcategories of the same category and also in Category:Newspapers of the United States, 1960. I found many Morning Call newspaper ads that were not tagged properly but that requires some weeding through the large categories. That file can now be found in various ways depending on how people look. These images are much, much more likely to be used and seen if they are placed within the current structure here. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 01:08, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
- For example also, does it make sense for Category:1928 Jubilee Parade to be in both Category:1928 in Allentown, Pennsylvania and Category:Allentown, Pennsylvania in the 1920s? Yes, it is a bit more hidden but it can be found now via Category:1928 in Pennsylvania. Feel free to disagree with me, that's fine. Categorization here is one of the constant disputes people have. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 01:11, 4 November 2021 (UTC)

- As I wrote before, adding categories is a good thing, and that's great. have at it, as it adds value to the information that has been uploaded. . No reason to change whatever is there. The contributions do add up over time, I've never bothered to count them, but I have tried to keep them organized. Take care Atwngirl (talk) 14:32, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
- Is there a reason Category:The Morning Call (Allentown, PA), 1895 is under Category:Newspaper advertising in Allentown, Pennsylvania? The images within it go under both but not the categories necessarily. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 23:51, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
- I created that category to store newspaper ads. The number of items in it has grown over time. Probably 99% of the files in it are ads. Each one of them has a time (by decade) category and also a merchant category. Dividing them by newspaper I suppose is good, in the coding sequence that is in the title is "MC" for Morning Call (again 99% of them), although there are two other 1800s papers (Democrat) and another one that has a few articles whose name i can't remember. (The Allentown Critic is the original name for The Morning Call) However what you will find is that Allentown has had one newspaper since about 1900 or so.

- There was an evening paper (Evening Chronicle), that was started in the 1870s as the "Daily Chronicle" , which was started before the Morning Call (about 1890). It was acquired by the Morning Call in the 1930s and became it's evening edition under the name "Evening Chronicle" until it stopped publishing in 1980. When the Evening Chronicle and Morning Call were published as separate papers, the company became Call-Chronicle newspapers. It's Sunday edition was a single-edition paper called (and still is today) the "Sunday Call-Chronicle". Two reasons I did not identify the difference is (1) The Evening Chronicle is not archived and the microfilms of it were inexplicably thrown away some years ago. Or perhaps a set of microfilms are in private hands, but unavailable so there is simply no publishing history that can be scanned. Also (2) I saw no reason to seperate the Sunday paper from the Daily paper, it's all the same newspaper. Take care :) Atwngirl (talk) 01:53, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- I am dividing them by newspaper because that is the way newspapers categorized by year are organized. Most likely there is a library in the area which has microfilms of each newspaper page like this one does in Texas. There is a never ending mess of information out there. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 20:21, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- cool. They are all tagged Atwngirl (talk) 22:24, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

Was File:1916 - Lyceum Theater Burned Down - 15 May DEM - Allentown PA.jpg from 1912 or from 1916? The title says 1916 but the fire wasn't until 1916 so that doesn't make sense. Ricky81682 (talk) 23:30, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
- It was a typo in the title. I do not have the authority to change it. Atwngirl (talk)
- So the title of the file is supposed to be 1912? I can rename the file but wasn't the fire in 1916? I categorized it into 1916 categories. Is that correct? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 21:37, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- I reviewed the history of the theater. The Lycum theater was built in 1912. In May 1916, it burned down in a fire. The "DEM" after the 15 May in the title referrs to the newspaper that clipping came from, the Allentown Democrat (DEM) Newspaper. The title of the article is correct as is. Thank you for reviewing this. Atwngirl (talk)

Hi Atwngirl. How do you know File:1969 - Lafyette Electronics - Allentown PA.jpg is OK to upload under a {{PD-US-no notice}} license if you don't really know anything about the photo's en:provenance? The file's description states it's "self scanned" but there's no indication where the photo came from. Did you find the image being used online somewhere? Did you find it in some print publication? The photo had to come from somewhere if you didn't take it yourself. For reference, unpublished works with an anonymous author are eligible for copyright protection for 120 years after creation, which would mean this isn't OK for Commons if that the case here unless it was taken prior to January 1, 1903. In addition, "PD-US-no notice" license generally require someway of verifying that to be the case. Maybe images found online or in print publications have their border cropped out or don't show the back of the photo, and these are two places where copyright notices were often added. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:45, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- That photo came from a bunch of photos that was being sold at a flea market at the allentown farmers market. Scanned it on my HP printer/scanner and then worked on it with my photo software with some other photos. No copyrights shown on it. Atwngirl (talk)
- Since you didn't take these photos yourself and don't know anything about their en:provenance, there's really no way to assess their copyright status. Copyright notices were typically required for published photos, and I don't believe were rarely added to photos intended for personal use only. You're scanning of the photo didn't generate a new copyright for the scan; so, the only thing that matters is the copyright status of the original photos themselves. -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:55, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
- The photo dates to 1969-70 because that's when the buisness opened at that location, so it would fit with the tag I gave it. And who knows who took it i may have just bought the origional photographer's prints after he died and his family was selling stuff off at the farmer's market. It's a 50 year old buisness that closed up before 1980 anyway so you know whatever. You seem to know copyrights in and out. I just try to follow the rules by tagging the photos i upload Atwngirl (talk)
- Do you remember when you bought the photo? Not necessarily the exact date, but roughly the year when you bought it. The photo being taken between 1969 and 1980 doesn't necessarily mean it's within the public domain since photos taken in that same time period which weren't COM:PUBLISHed prior to 1978 and for which the original author is unknown are considered to be "unpublished anonymous works" that are still eligible for copyright protection for 120 years after creation. The year the store opened and the year it closed can help establish a time from for assessing the photo's copyright, but the store itself doesn't have any claim of copyright ownership over the photo just because it was photographed. It's more important to determine if the photo was ever published, when it was published (if it was), who took it and when that person died. Those things can be helpful in determining how copyright law applies to the photo. In addition, File:1969 - Lafyette Electronics - 10 Aug MC - Allentown PA.jpg and File:1969 - Leon Furniture Fire - 9 Feb MC 3 - Allentown PA.jpg also have similar issues for slightly different reasons. These clearly appear to have been published in the newspaper en:The Morning Call: so, there's almost certainly a clear date of publication with the copyrights of the photos being held either by the paper itself or the photographer, and the copyright of the text being held by the paper. I'm pretty sure that only advertisements appearing in newspapers during that time period were specifically required to have separate visible copyright notices in the advertisement itself; newspaper articles and the photos used in them were typically covered by a copyright notice for the entire paper. In other words, a separate specific visible copyright notice was not required for each page, or each article or photo appearing in the newspaper. Scanning an old paper article clipping doesn't automatically make it no longer eligible for copyright protection. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:11, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

Own work photos and 2D copying[edit]
If File:2022 - Roy C. Afflerbach - Allentown PA.jpg and File:2022 - William L. Heydt .- Allentown PA.jpg are photos that you took of photos taken by someone else, then no new copyright was created for your photos per COM:2D copying and only the copyright of the original photo matters. Since Pennsylvania isn't really one of the US states that releases works created by state employees as part of their offical duties as explained here and here, the photos are most likely copyrighted and their copyrights are held by someone. typically, the copyright of a photo is held by the photographer taking in, but in some case there may subsequently be a en:copyright transfer agreement or the photo is a en:work for hire. In the latter two cases, the copyrights may be held held by the City of Allentown, but the COM:CONSENT of the copyright holder is still going to need to be verified. Even if the current Mayor of Allentown has the authority to give you their consent as the city's representative, verbal consent isn't sufficient for Commons purposes. This is because the mayor isn't just give you their permission; they're giving everyone in the world their permission. Did you receive anything in writing or via email that resembles what written on the "COM:CONSENT" page or did you just ask if you could upload the photos for use on Wikipedia? -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:02, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- I took those photos in the fourth floor of the conference room in Allentown City Hall. There are photos of all of the Mayors of Allentown since 1866 in there.. They are photos I took of the photos on the wall made by i don't know who. I aske at the desk and Mayor Turek said is was ok.. Atwngirl (talk)
- Since you took photos of someone else's photos, you can only claim copyright ownership of your photo but not over the photos you photographed. Moreover, since your photos are essentially nothing more than a slavish reproduction of the photos hanging on the walls involving very little if any creative input on your part, a new copyright wouldn't have been generated for your photos; therefore, the copyrights of the original photos themselves is all that matters. Without knowing any more about the en:provenence of the photos hanging on the wall, there's no way to determine what their copyright status may be which is going to make it very hard for Commons to keep them without having some way of verifying the COM:CONSENT of the copyright owners of the original photos. -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:47, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
You are invited to join the discussion at COM:VP#Category pages that look like quasi-Wikipedia articles. Marchjuly (talk) 19:25, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Atwngirl. Perhaps you can clarify why you’ve been creating category pages with extensive textual content on them so that they seem like articles about the subject matter. Someone pinged you early on in the discussion, but you might not have noticed it or have just been busy with other things. — Marchjuly (talk) 19:25, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

Good stuff![edit]
Don't get discouraged, I have worked all weekend to add the proper licenses to your mayor project. Do you have a Flickr account also? If you represent an archive or an historical society, you are eligible for a Flickr Commons account: https://www.flickr.com/commons/register/ . See the progress on the mayor project here: wikidata:Talk:Q99627141. Because Wikidata understands dates, it found an error in your chart at Wikipedia. I created a Wikidata entry for each mayor. In case you have somehow missed the pings: I strongly urge you to participate in Commons:Village pump#Category pages that look like quasi-Wikipedia article. I'd hate to see large amounts of your work get deleted, but that seems to be the way things are trending, and it is a much more likely outcome if you don't participate in the discussion. - Jmabel ! talk 17:37, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
