Wizard upload imports the photograph upside downEdit
I looked for "upside down" but didn't find anything. I just uploaded a photo I took yesterday, but the image shown is of the photo upside down. When I click on the image file (uploaded), it is correct. Metaphorz9 (talk) 18:27, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

- It would be helpful if you linked to the putative image you supposedly uploaded. I don't see any in your contributions. It also helps to understand that the EXIF data may contain instructions to rotate the image apart from its natural rotation. So that extra rotation may be hidden from some viewers but come into play later on. It's worth checking to see whether something in your path of image generation inserted a 180° rotation. John David StewartEdit
I am a retired lecturer from the University of Birmingham, England. John Stewart was the founder of the Institute of Local Government Studies, where I was employed. He was the leading academic in the UK who worked on matters relating to local government, and on that basis should have a Wikipedia entry. In the past, I have edited just one Wikipedia article, on Selly Oak Colleges, most recently in 2021. I have written an article about John Stewart, which meets your guidelines. I wrote it in WORD and have saved it in Rich Text Format. It does not include pictures or graphics. Can you advise me how to proceed? Do I have to convert it before loading? My username is Tr1g1av=== Can you confirm that I can use this username and the related password? Many thanks Tr1g1av=== (talk) 17:09, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Tr1g1av===:
- This is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. We don't host user-written articles here.
- I strongly recommend you read en:Help:Your first article. To edit Wikipedia, you have to write directly into the wiki. I guess you can copy-paste a good deal from your word document, but it's not otherwise relevant. Also, it has its own conventions (and templates) for citations, etc.
- I also strongly recommend you read en:WP:COI, about conflicts of interest. It sounds like you are at least sufficiently connected to your subject that you have a potential conflict to reveal in accord with the rules stated there.
- You say it "meets our [I presume you mean Wikipedia's] guidelines, but the above points make me wonder how familiar you are with those guidelines, so you may, in particular, also want to read en:Wikipedia:Verifiability, especially what are and are not considered reliable sources to cite. - Jmabel ! talk 17:23, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
File qualityEdit
When I download a file that needs editing I have to download the highest quality of the image otherwise I can't edit it. But the file in question has to have a specific dimension to fit the articles, and when I resize it the file size and quality decreases. Is there any way I can stop this? AtlasSweden (talk) 19:58, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
- Commons:CropTool can do lossless cropping, if that's what you mean by resizing. If you crop to remove a border or other unimportant content, you can overwrite the existing image, otherwise please upload the cropped version as a new image. If you just need a smaller image, no cropping, then use the corresponding wiki code, see en:Help:Pictures. --rimshottalk 22:02, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
- @AtlasSweden: And if that didn't answer your question, could you please be more specific about what you are trying to do (and to what file) rather than an abstract question. - Jmabel ! talk 04:49, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
- Or are you talking about the thumbnail dimensions? The server doesn't send all the image to the browser, but a scaled down (resized) version. You can specify the dimensions you want in the article, without doing anything on Commons. If you want a different aspect ratio, then you might have to crop the image, but you should still use the full resolution image. Don't scale it down. –LPfi (talk) 20:55, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
Externally used imageEdit
Hi, I swear we have a template that goes on a files talkpage that says where it's used - if this does exist do we know what it's called?, I swear I've seen it on 1 or 2 file talkpages in the past, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 22:53, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

- User:Davey2010: User:Trade asked the same question a few days ago. If either of you has a name for this you think would be more mnemonic, and it doesn't already exist as a template name on Commons, feel free to create a template redirect from that name. - Jmabel ! talk 04:52, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Jmabel, Ah okay, I only found it by putting in "Externally used image" and then basically trimming it down until something popped up which "{{External use}}" did, I've created "{{Externally used image}}" and "{{Images used externally}}" as the first redirect will definitely help me if I never need to use this again but didn't know if the second may help others too,
- Thank you for your help - had you not replied I would never have thought of creating the redirect so thank you for replying and for your help, Warm Regards, –Davey2010Talk 12:19, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

RightsEdit
Hello,
I tried a few months ago to put a photography of the French deputy Aurélien Saintoul on his wikipedia page, but after discussion, I was told that the photography was not free of rights.
So, I wrote him an email asking him to send me a photography and an email authorizing the publication and the lifting of image rights for use on Wikipedia. That's what he did (I blurred my name).1,2
So I was wondering how to add this in the permissions?
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aur%C3%A9lien_Saintoul.jpg AgisdeSparte (talk) 10:28, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
- You will find the information at VRT. However: the permission you posted is an image in french, so i cannot easily run it through online MT. But a permission for "use in Wikipedia" does not suffice. A permission for use under a free license (for example cc-by-4.0) is needed. You may need to get another permission. C.Suthorn (talk) 14:23, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
- @AgisdeSparte: And the permission needs to come from the owner of the copyright (typically the photographer), not the subject of the photo. - Jmabel ! talk 16:04, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

how long does it take to delete a file uploaded by self after deletion request is raised? is there a faster and easier way for files uploaded by self? Shishtn (talk) 13:08, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Shishtn: a difficult question to answer in the abstract. If you made the request within 7 days after uploading, and it isn't in use, and you marked it correctly as a speedy deletion request by uploader, it should typically be a day or two. If not, then it could take longer and may not even be deleted. I'm guessing you are asking about a specific file, could you please say what file? - Jmabel ! talk 16:08, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
Removing a wrongful "Upload a new version of this file" uploadEdit
Was trying to figure out how to properly attribute the source file for an upscaled and translated version of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DNA_microarray.png, and assuming that the proper way to do so would be through the "upload a new version of this file" option. I quickly found out this was not the case and could not find a way to undo my actions. Could somebody assist me with this? Kaarle Mäkelä (talk) 13:26, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Kaarle Mäkelä: I think you've successfully done so using the "revert" option, though because of cacheing you may not see that immediately. See the question "Why is the old picture and not the new uploaded picture on my screen?" at COM:FAQ#PURGE. --bjh21 (talk) 14:04, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
- As for how to attribute for a different version under a new filename: have a look at File:'OUT OF GAS' SIGNS HAVE CROPPED UP ALL OVER THE PORTLAND AREA etc NARA - 548174 (Ke4roh restore).jpg which is a decent example of doing it well. - Jmabel ! talk 16:11, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

I would like to upload a school's logo to Wikipedia, but that image isn't created or owned by me, how should I notice to copyright issues? Laithomas (talk) 07:36, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Laithomas: Each Wikipedia has its own rules on fair use; you don't say whether this is about uploading to the Chinese-language Wikipedia, the English-language Wikipedia, or some other. You'd have to ask on the relevant Wikipedia.
- (The only allowed way to upload it here on Commons would be if the copyright-holder would offer a free license, which is unlikely in a case like this.) - Jmabel ! talk 16:03, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
PageViews APIEdit
BaGLAMa 2 is a tool based on the Wikimedia PageViews API. At https://glamtools.toolforge.org/baglama2/#gid=920&month=202212&giu=dewiki&server=de.wikipedia.org it states that the page de:Lützerath containing the file Greta Thunberg at LütziBleibt in 2023 30.jpg was shown 10504 times in 12-2022. However I took this foto at 14th January 2023 (when I was for the first time in Lützerath), uploaded it at 15th and it was added to the article at 17th of january. How can it been shown 10504 times a month before it even existed? Is there something wrong with the PageViews API? C.Suthorn (talk) 09:10, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
- I'm guessing that it shows how many times the page was viewed, and knows that the page now contains the photo, but doesn't have the sophistication to know that the page didn't contain the photo at that time. - Jmabel ! talk 16:06, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

Is this a van?Edit
Hi, So I'm sorting the Vans category out and have come across Category:Honda L700 - The EN article calls it a "commercial station wagon",
Do I create a "Honda vans" category for this or should this be classed as a normal car?, Most older UK estate cars tend to get used as vans and obviously they're not in van categories so I would assume the van category should be removed?,
Wanted a second opinion in case I've missed something, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 17:58, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
- Station wagon or estate car, even a shooting brake. But under UK laws (and much of Europe) it's not a "van" because it has glazed rear panels (this might also involve rear sets, or the upholstery of rear seats, depending on jurisdiction). This has tax implications. At the time these were built, they'd have been expensive vans to import to the UK, because they'd be taxed more heavily as cars, not commercial vans.
- I don't think there's any overlap with kei cars. Although they might qualify today, they wouldn't have done (despite the engine size) back then. Andy Dingley (talk) 18:56, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Andy Dingley, Oh I see, That makes sense, Okay I'll remove the van category, Thank you Andy for your help I greatly appreciate it, Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 19:27, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

- I don't understand your description of the problem. If you get an error message, try to copy it for pasting here. Somebody might recognise it and tell what it is about, or one could search for the message and find out what it means. You could simply try again, and if the problem persists, then copy the error message. –LPfi (talk) 18:53, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- OK. I found your upload attempt in a log. It seems you tried to upload the image in thumbnail size. Instead upload it at full size. The filter is more picky when it comes to uploads when editing an article. You could retry the upload using the upload link here at Commons: Special:UploadWizard. Often a thumbnail-sized image hints that you just found it on the net. Did you draw the coats of arms yourself? Otherwise you are not supposed to use {{Own}} as source nor your user name as author, and you should check copyright issues. –LPfi (talk) 19:02, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

- Hi Lorna20min. Before you do anything else, you might want to carefully read through Commons:Licensing to make sure you understand what it means to upload content to Commons. Many companies are highly protective of their intellectual property and uploading your company's logo to Commons might actually not be in the best interests of your company. Although logos can be uploaded to Commons, it's usually only done when the logo is considered to be too simple to be eligible for copyright protection or the copyright holder explicitly agrees to give their COM:CONSENT and agrees to release the logo under one of the free licenses that Commons accepts. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:19, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
- As for the technical issue: you don't mention which of many methods you were using to upload the photo, but for beginners Special:UploadWizard is usually easiest. If it doesn't do exactly what you want, go in and edit the filepage after uploading. - Jmabel ! talk 16:13, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

- @DigitalIceAge: In most contexts, I'm seeing what you uploaded three times, but the file history is thumbnailing the latest upload looking like the original version.
- Has to be some sort of caching thing, etc. Doubtless will eventually sort itself out.

authorship of a photo of a published book photoEdit
I found in google images the book cover image of a book that I am co-author and I would like to post such image in a wikipedia page. Is that legal? Or should I make a photo of the book cover myself, since I have one exemplar with me? Thak you for your support. Valdemar José Correia Barbosa Rodrigues (talk) 01:10, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Valdemar José Correia Barbosa Rodrigues. If you're pt:Valdemar José Correia Barbosa Rodrigues, then you probably should take a careful look at pt:Wikipédia:Conflito de interesse before making any additional edits to the article. Generally, subjects of Wikipedia articles are considered to have a conflict of interest when it comes to editing content written about them on Wikipedia, but things might be different when it comes to Portuguese Wikipedia. As for your question about taking a photo of the book, if you're the author of the book, then you could upload such a photo to Commons as long as you're the sole copyright holder of the book and whatever imagery appears on its cover. Please read Commons:Licensing because Commons will only be able to host such an image if you agree to make it avaiable under one of the free licenses that Commons accepts. If, on the other hand, others involved with the book (e.g. publisher, co-author) also can came copyright ownership over it, then you might need to get their COM:CONSENT as well for Commons to host the file. If you simply take a photo of the book cover yourself, then basically all you need to worry about is the copyright status of the book cover you photograph since you would be the copyright holder of the photograph. If, however, you try to upload someone else's photo, then it would depend on whether the other person's photo is a case of COM:2D copying. If it is, then you just need to worry about the copyright status of the book's cover; if it's not, then you will also need to consider the copyright status of the photo taken by the other person since it would be considered a derivative work. In short, it would probably be better to take your own photo of the book than to try and use other person's photo. If it turns out the file is not suitable to be hosted by Commons, you could try to upload it locally to Portuguese Wikipedia as non-free content. Commons doesn't accept any type of fair use content as explained here, but Portuguese Wikipedia does seem to allow it per pt:Política de Isenção da Doutrina (PID). So, you will need to ask on Portuguese Wikipedia for details about its policy and whether it would allow you to add a non-free photo of your book to the Portuguese Wikipedia article written about you. For reference, such a thing isn't generally allowed by English Wikipedia, but Portuguese Wikipedia might have a non-free content use policy that is different from English Wikipedia's policy. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:37, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- Many thaks! I«ll just put an external link to the book cover image that is hosted in a book sellers page, In that case there will be no poroblems, righy? Thaks you very much anyway, your answer was very useful and enlightening. 85.139.112.180 01:47, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

what if the image i put in already is on the website?Edit
help i think i am.. gong to jial Stoove Joobs (talk) 22:56, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Stoove Joobs: we rarely imprison users (at least outside of certain counties in Texas), but we have been known to block them. So far, you are in little danger of that.
- On the other hand, and most importantly: for the one and only photo you've uploaded so far: why do you think it is either public domain or free-licensed? My guess is that it isn't and we'll have to delete it.
- On the question in your headline: typically, if we find a duplicate image, we usually delete the newer upload (and turn its name into a redirect), although if the new upload is higher resolution, we will delete the older one instead; this also sometimes involves some editing of the file page of the one that is kept, if the version to be deleted has useful information that is missing from the one we are keeping. This is for exact duplicates; if (for example) they are from a different print of a film photo, we usually keep both. There are a few other subtleties, but I'm guessing that was as much of an answer as you need at this time. Please do try not to upload duplicates: when you do you are making work for someone else. - Jmabel ! talk 23:31, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
These are my works, what information do I need to add to confirm this?Edit
These are my works, what information do I need to add to confirm this? Around the Worls (talk) 06:59, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Around the Worls. Maybe the first thing you should do is read Commons:Own work and then self-assess which of the files you uploaded are really your work. You might also want to take a look at Commons:Licensing because "own work" has a very specific meaning when it comes to intellectual copyright. For example, if you walk out your front door and take a photo of the clouds in the sky, then that photo is 100% your own work and you are the sole copyright holder because neither clouds or the sky are eligible for copyright protection per se. However, if you take a photo of something created by someone else (e.g. a painting, sculpture, store sign, building), then it's quite possible that whatever you're photographing is protected by copyright and that copyright is held by someone else. Depending on the specific circumstances, your photo might be considered to be a derivative work, which means there are two copyrights that need assessing: the one for your photo and the one for whatever you photographed. Of course, what I've posted is a very oversimplified explanation of things, but copyright laws can be quite tricky and they can also vary quite a bit from country to country. So many of your uploads seem to have been deleted, but if you feel that any which were truly 100% your own work were deleted by mistake, please list the names of the files here and someone might be able to help you sort things out. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:39, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
- Also, I see COM:SCOPE issues. For example, it is hard to see the use of File:Thomas Cranmer Canterbury Cathedral Kent.png, a low-res image with a large quantity of text so small as to be illegible. - Jmabel ! talk 18:25, 3 March 2023 (UTC)

is it okey if i upload my videos and photos with my firends and classmates? Adhambekbro (talk) 12:13, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Adhambekbro: If they have an encyclopedic value and not outside the scope of the project, you can upload them. Read Commons:FAQ for more informations.--MehdiTalk 12:22, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
- Really, though, probably not. Commons is not a repository for personal photos, and it is relatively unlikely that pictures of your friends and classmates are within Commons' scope. - Jmabel ! talk 18:27, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Adhambekbro: I assume many of them are in scope, as examples on the life of today's youth. Choose ones that you think are valuable from that perspective. There are of course personal rights issues, which you should clear with your friends. If you want to go forward with this, I am sure we are able to give further advice, such as suggesting categories for which such photos are needed. –LPfi (talk) 07:59, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
Incorrect NJTransit Route icon colorsEdit
The background colors of the route icons for NJ Transit's Montclair-Boonton Line and Gladstone Branch are incorrect. The Montclair Boonton should be #E66B5B, and the Gladstone Branch should be #A2D5AE. The text of both files is correct and does not need to be changed. Unfortunately I am unsure how to go about correcting this. Courtesy ping @Jari Rauma: who fixed a similar issue last time. The Boston Railfan (talk) 14:55, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hello @The Boston Railfan: I can change the colors, but first tell me where you got the right colors and why you want the colors changed. Best regards. Jari Rauma (talk) 10:06, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
- The pictures are ready. I would like some kind of confirmation of the right colors before uploading the images. Have the colors of the lines changed? How did the uploader of the original images get it so wrong? – In the Gladstone picture, the HSB change was -4°, -17%, 56% and the green level was 0.97. In Montclair delta HSB: 22°, 41%, 40% and finally red level 1.05. Jari Rauma (talk) 11:55, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Jari Rauma: See en:Module:Adjacent stations/NJ Transit. The Montclair Boonton Line is currently using the color code from the original ex-Erie Lackawanna Boonton Line, when in actuality the present-day NJT Montclair Boonton Line is a different service and has a different color. The Gladstone Branch color is currently exactly the same as the Morristown Line, which, although the Gladstone is a branch of the Morristown Main Line, is also incorrect as Gladstone trains are considered their own separate independent service. The Boston Railfan (talk) 16:13, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
- @The Boston Railfan: The photos are now uploaded. The reason for the unusual HSB change was that now the colors between the letters and the background are also correct. Please put the next possible request on my talk page. Jari Rauma (talk) 20:59, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

How to format namesEdit
Edward DeGroff formats the name this way. So I made a category Category:Edward DeGroff. But the actual files very: "Edward De Groff", "Edward de Groff".
How should the category name be formatted? Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 20:07, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Krok6kola, It would seem their surname varies across the web so imho it should follow EN and be "Edward DeGroff" - I've changed their name on the EN article to match the article title and have told people to seek consensus first before changing, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 20:19, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
- "Edward de Groff" is the spelling chosen by the creator of the article, Pcmcglew, on the basis of the signature of the subject [3], which, if correct, seems a reasonable basis. Davey2010 changed it today to "Edward DeGroff", although, per his rationale, his change should have seeked consensus. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:09, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Asclepias, I'll be honest I don't really care what surname is used and I don't care enough to start an RFC on it - I simply figured it made more sense for everything to be consistent and people can fight over it at the talkpage but yes strictly speaking I should've got consensus for it myself,
- I only cared enough to change it yesterday as it related to Commons otherwise I really wouldn't have bothered, I don't edit EN much at all and the subject isn't of my interest so I would've left it to EN had it not concerned Commons if that makes sense, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 21:07, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons Query Service 175.100.15.243 16:01, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
- @456legend: What I can see, the images are the same size. The problem is that some are close-ups, while others include much more in addition to the face. One solution would be to crop all images to be similar in that respect (of course: upload under another filename). If the proportion of the photo that is face is the same, like-sized thumbnails will show the face equally large. –LPfi (talk) 20:34, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
- @LPfi: Okay so this should work ig. Thank you 456legend (talk) 05:21, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
- Not for use within an infobox, but the "packed" option on the <gallery> element can be useful for this. See Commons:Featured pictures/People for an example of using it well. Jmabel ! talk 05:44, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
Naoag (talk) 10:35, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Naoag: Yes, If your files comply with the commons copyright license, You can upload Your PDF files. About size limitation read this guide. --MehdiTalk 13:31, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Naoag The size limitation guide seems a bit optimistic. In fact it is possible to upload files (pdf or other) with up to exactly 4.0GiB (4.294.967.296 Bytes). But most upload tools will not be able to do that. The UploadWizard will upload files of up to 600MB and sometimes 1.2GB. You can try the PDF with 1.65GB and may succeed, but you also may need to use a different tool. C.Suthorn (talk) 16:29, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
File Preview Not UpdatingEdit
The previews (and file history thumbnails) for couple of files ([1] and [2]) I have uploaded are not updating. This is not an issue with browser cache because I have cleared it a number of times and the older version of the file shows in archived versions ([5] and [6]). The newer version did successfully upload because it appears correctly when viewing the original file and the correct version of the latter image appears in a Wikipedia article it is used in. In addition, if you use the animated history script to view an older version and then return to the most recent version, the preview correctly displays.
I found a previous discussion that appears to describe the same issue, but it didn't seem to be any particular help. Can any offer an explanation of what causes it or a solution for the issue? –Noha307 (talk) 18:47, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Noha307: it's still a caching issue of some sort, though; possibly not entirely on your end (though could you take a look with a different browser?) but likely to sort itself out over time. - Jmabel ! talk 21:02, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I just checked with Microsoft Edge and the preview for the first file has updated, but the second one has not. Odd. –Noha307 (talk) 21:09, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
- I'm actually having another strange issue at the moment. I just created a personal user category so I could use a template and used Cat-a-lot to add all of the images on my userpage to the category. However, cat-a-lot finds 608 images, but the category only list 607 after the transfer. Maybe it could be related in some way? –Noha307 (talk) 21:16, 5 March 2023 (UTC)

-- Asclepias (talk) 11:00, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
